Fear Not: Waging War on Anxiety

God has been burning this message into my heart because I’ve seen too many of my brothers and sisters bound by the chains of anxiety. It makes me angry to see my friends, my family, and my community trapped by lies. Anxiety is a liar, a thief, and a destroyer, and it has no place in the lives of Kingdom people. It steals joy, peace, and purpose. Today, I’m standing up and declaring war on anxiety—not just for myself but for everyone in my circle of influence. It’s time to break these chains, expose anxiety at its root, and walk boldly in the freedom Christ has already secured for us.

Fear and anxiety are emotions we all experience at some point in our lives. Yet, as men and women of the Kingdom, God has called us to a higher perspective. Over and over in Scripture, we are reminded of two simple yet powerful words: “Fear not.” These words echo through the ages as a divine command and a loving reassurance. As we prepare to step into 2025, let us leave anxiety behind in 2024 and walk boldly into the future, trusting the King of Kings who holds it all in His hands.

Fear and Anxiety: Understanding the Link

Anxiety gains a foothold when we lose sight of our identity in Christ. When we don’t truly know who we are in Him, we leave space for doubt, fear, and insecurity to creep in. This is why we must be intentional about engraving the words of God on our hearts. His Word is our weapon, our shield, and our foundation. When we meditate on Scripture and internalize His promises, we fortify ourselves against the lies of the enemy. Knowing who we are in Christ—beloved, redeemed, victorious—leaves no room for anxiety and fear to grip us. This doesn’t mean that we have done something wrong – there’s no need to beat ourselves up. Anxiety and fear attack everyone – its not about knowing all the right scriptures and the correct steps in some theological dance. The reality is simply, the more we anchor our identity in Jesus, the less power anxiety has over us.

Fear and anxiety are closely related. Fear arises from an immediate threat, while anxiety stems from the anticipation of future uncertainty. Both can grip our hearts and minds, leaving us feeling trapped and powerless. Sometimes, we aren’t even aware that these sneaky little jerks have weaseled their way into our minds and hearts. Yet every single knee will bow to our Lord, including fear and anxiety. When we intentionally redirect our thoughts to Him, He fills the space that was once occupied with His peace and truth. An indicator that anxiety has gripped us is when we find ourselves spiraling into thought patterns of endless “what ifs.” This should act as a trigger, reminding us to seek the Lord immediately. We can have a disciplined mind, as God’s Word commands us to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). By doing this, we break chains before they become strongholds.

God’s Word addresses both. In Isaiah 41:10, God says:

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

This promise reminds us that, even when fear seems logical or anxiety feels overwhelming, God is present. He strengthens, helps, and upholds us. Anxiety often tries to convince us that the “what-ifs” will crush us, but quickly dissolves when we fix our eyes on the One who controls the outcome.

Worship The God Who Makes a Way Where There is No Way

When the “what ifs” are rolling around in your mind, one of the most powerful things you can do is begin to worship God. Worship shifts the focus from the problem to the Problem-Solver. It changes the atmosphere, breaks chains, and ushers in freedom, just as it did for Paul and Silas. In Acts 16:25-26, they were imprisoned, but instead of succumbing to despair, they prayed and sang hymns to God. Suddenly, there was an earthquake, the prison doors flew open, and their chains fell off. Worship invites the presence of God into your situation, and where His Spirit is, there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17). When anxiety closes in, lift your voice in praise and watch the chains break and the peace of God flood your heart. Life often presents situations that defy our understanding. The bills are piling up, relationships are strained, or the diagnosis seems grim. These moments test our faith, yet they are precisely when God shows up in miraculous ways. In Exodus 14:13-14, when the Israelites faced the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army closing in, Moses declared:

“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

God parted the sea, making a way where none existed. In the same way, He will make a way for you. Trust Him, even when it makes no sense. He is always working behind the scenes, orchestrating events for His glory and your good.

Seeing Giants Through God’s Eyes

See, often we are staring at the giant before us and comparing it to our own limited ability instead of the infinite ability of our God. This perspective is what gives fear and anxiety their power. But when we enlarge in our hearts and minds the God that we serve and learn more of Him, we realize that there is no way He will ever let us down. He never fails. Fixing our eyes on His greatness and His track record of faithfulness allows us to face any giant with confidence, knowing that the battle is not ours but the Lord’s.

Understanding Our Need for Control

Anxiety often finds a foothold in our lives because of our deep-seated need for control. We want to manage every detail, predict every outcome, and protect ourselves from harm. This desire for control becomes a breeding ground for fear and anxiety when things don’t go according to our plans. However, surrendering this need to God is essential. He reminds us in Isaiah 55:8-9 that His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. When we relinquish control and trust in His perfect wisdom, we experience the peace that only He can give. Trusting Him doesn’t mean we ignore the challenges—it means we acknowledge that He is bigger than any problem we face.

Spiritual Combat

Applying what God says about us takes intentionality, especially when anxiety tries to cloud our belief. One powerful way to combat anxiety is to speak God’s truth over your life, even when you don’t fully believe it yet. Say it out loud: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), or “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). By speaking His words, you invite the Holy Spirit to knit that truth into your spirit. Over time, His Word will take root and flourish.

Speaking the truth of who we are in Christ is a powerful way to combat fear and anxiety. Here are some declarations to speak over yourself daily:

  • I am a child of God, chosen and dearly loved (Ephesians 1:4-5).
  • I am more than a conqueror through Him who loves me (Romans 8:37).
  • I am a new creation in Christ; the old has passed away, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21).
  • I have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
  • I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

As you declare these truths, let them sink into your spirit. Even if you don’t feel it in the moment, allow the Holy Spirit to align your heart with God’s reality. These words will fortify your identity and leave no space for the enemy.

Anxiety often feels like a venomous serpent, striking at our peace and injecting fear into our minds. But Jesus has given us authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). This authority is not just a metaphor; it is a spiritual truth. We are not helpless victims to anxiety—we are empowered victors in Christ.

When anxiety comes slithering into your thoughts, rise up and declare the authority Jesus has given you. Speak His Word boldly: “I trample on serpents and scorpions, and nothing shall by any means harm me.” As you stand firm in this promise, the grip of fear loosens, and the peace of God takes its place.

Manufacturer’s Warranty

Anxiety is plaguing our society like never before. Children are anxious in schools, self-help books line the shelves, and emotional learning programs are on the rise. But the true answer is Jesus.

When something is broken, we go to the manufacturer to fix it. In the same way, we must bring ourselves to the altar and let the One who created us repair what is broken. The manufacturer of our souls knows how to address every defect and bring us to wholeness. It’s time to stop seeking temporary fixes and allow the eternal Healer to do His work in us.

Trusting God is not always easy, especially when we do not understand His plan. But faith is not about understanding every detail; it is about believing in God’s character. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

When we release our need to control and surrender our anxieties to God, miracles happen. Time and again, God’s people have experienced breakthroughs by simply walking in obedience and trust. The walls of Jericho fell, David defeated Goliath, and Peter walked on water—all because they trusted God’s word over their fears.

Leaving Anxiety Behind in 2024

As we approach 2025, it’s time to lay down the burdens of anxiety and fear. These emotions have no place in the hearts of Kingdom people. I want to share a scripture that God has ingrained in my heart – one that will never leave me – one that I cling to constantly. Philippians 4:6-7 declares:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

We have a mission to fulfill and a mighty, majestic King to serve. Anxiety distracts us, but faith propels us forward. We are called to be lights in a dark world, ambassadors of hope and peace. God is doing something incredible in and through us, and we cannot afford to let fear hold us back. As we bring every single care to the altar, no matter how ugly we come, He shows up, each and every time, right on time – in the middle of our chaos and brings HIS peace. HIS peace – surpasses our finite understanding. This is miraculous peace – holy peace – something only God can give. Notice that we are protected by this peace. It guards our hearts and our minds. This is crucial in our walk around this planet. We see the victory that He’s provided when we walk in peace.

A Call to Kingdom Boldness

2025 is not just another year; it is an opportunity to step into our Kingdom assignments with boldness and confidence. Remember who you are: a child of the Most High, called and chosen for such a time as this. Let’s leave fear and anxiety in the past, embrace the truth that our God is sovereign, faithful, and able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).

As we cross into this new season, take hold of the promises of God. Fear not, for He is with you. Trust Him, even when it makes no sense. And watch as He makes a way, performs miracles, and uses you to bring His Kingdom to earth.

At the end of the day, anxiety is nothing but a feeling, a deception, a lie, a serpent. It tries to mask itself as truth, but it has no real power except what we give it. When we align ourselves with God’s truth and allow His Word to renew our minds, the lies of anxiety lose their grip. Remember, anxiety may hiss, but it is powerless in the presence of our Almighty God. Stand firm in this knowledge, exercise your authority, and walk in the freedom that is already yours.

Step boldly into 2025. The King of Kings goes before you.
