Let the Rain Make You Grow

So, it rained today, and as I watched the droplets fall from the sky, I couldn’t help but think about how much the earth depends on rain. Without it, nothing would grow. It’s such a simple concept, yet so profound—without rain, life cannot flourish. This realization struck me, especially when I thought about how much we tend to dislike rain. It’s inconvenient, dreary, and interrupts our plans. We even have sayings like, “Don’t rain on my parade.” Rain, to us, often symbolizes sadness or unwanted disruption. But what if rain, both literal and metaphorical, is one of the greatest gifts God has given us?

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Just as the earth needs seasons of rain to grow and flourish, we, too, need seasons of struggle and sadness to grow into who God has called us to be. It’s in those times that we are nourished, refined, and strengthened.

The Purpose of Rain

We often despise the rainy seasons of life—the heartbreaks, the disappointments, the moments of failure—but without them, we cannot grow. Think about it: how could we truly appreciate victory without experiencing struggle? How could we extend empathy to someone else’s pain if we’ve never endured our own? How can we treasure the sunny days if we’ve never known the rain?

James 1:2-4 reminds us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Our trials, much like the rain, are necessary. They prepare us for the purpose God has placed in us.

Sadness Has a Purpose Too

In the movie Inside Out, Joy wanted to shield Riley from sadness. She thought if Riley could just stay happy all the time, life would be perfect. But by the end of the movie, Joy realized that sadness wasn’t the enemy. Sadness brought depth, connection, and healing. Isn’t that true for us too? We try so hard to avoid sadness, but God uses it to develop compassion, humility, and wisdom in us.

Even Jesus, in His time on earth, experienced deep sorrow. Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as “a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.” Yet, through His suffering, He brought salvation to the world. If Jesus Himself endured pain for a greater purpose, how much more can we trust God to use our rainy seasons for good?

Growth Through the Storms

Rainy days are not meant to drown us but to nourish us. When it rains, we often focus on the inconvenience—the wet clothes, the gloomy skies, the canceled plans. But rain is what makes the flowers bloom. It’s what allows crops to grow and trees to flourish. And just like the earth needs rain, our souls need those seasons of struggle to flourish spiritually.

In Romans 5:3-5, Paul writes, “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” Every drop of rain in our lives is producing something beautiful within us. It’s building hope, shaping our character, and drawing us closer to God.

Letting the Rain Work in Us

The key is to not fight the rain but to let it do its work. When we go through hard times, it’s tempting to numb the pain or rush through it, but God calls us to be still and trust Him. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” In those quiet moments of sadness or struggle, God is at work. He’s pruning us, shaping us, and preparing us for what’s next.

That doesn’t mean it’s easy. Sometimes we stand in the rain and feel like we’ll never see the sun again. But don’t let the rain drown you. Instead, let it nourish you. Let it draw you closer to God and to the people around you. Galatians 6:2 reminds us to “carry each other’s burdens,” and in doing so, we fulfill the law of Christ. We are not meant to weather the storms of life alone.

A Message of Hope

If you’re in a rainy season right now, know this: God sees you. He knows your pain, and He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). You are not alone. You are part of something greater than you can imagine. You are loved, chosen, and created for a purpose.

Feel the sadness when it comes—don’t ignore it. Let it remind you of your humanity and your need for God. But don’t stay in that place. Let the rain teach you, shape you, and prepare you for the sunny days ahead.

So today, as the raindrops fall, I’m reminded that the rain is not my enemy. It’s my nourishment. It’s preparing me for growth. And when the sun finally breaks through the clouds, I’ll stand stronger, brighter, and more grateful for the beauty of the journey.

God is with you in the rain, and He’s preparing you for a harvest. Let the rain make you grow.
